CIPP drain lining forms a continuous resin liner inside an existing pipe. It is used for suitable cracks, worn surfaces or open joints that extend through a measured section while the old pipe remains supported and keeps a usable shape.
The liner cannot lift a low point, straighten a major offset or rebuild a collapse. Those faults need direct correction, sometimes followed by lining of the sound pipe on either side. The repair method guide explains that wider choice.
What CIPP lining does
A resin-saturated tube is introduced through a chamber or other suitable access, positioned along the chosen section and cured against the inside of the host pipe. The result is one internal sleeve rather than a series of separate local patches.
The old pipe acts as the mould. Its narrowest bore, bends and unsupported areas therefore matter before the material, installation route or curing system is selected. A camera passing through is useful evidence, but the lining equipment also needs a workable route.
Where a continuous liner is most relevant
CIPP is generally considered when related damage continues along a supported run. One short, isolated fault may need only a patch; a section without shape or support may need excavation.
Surveying and preparing the pipe
The starting CCTV should show where the proposed liner begins and ends. It also needs to locate branches, changes in diameter and bends within the route. Any part hidden by standing water, roots or deposits remains unresolved until it can be inspected properly.
Cleaning removes grease, scale, roots and loose material so the liner can sit against the pipe wall. The method must suit the host material. Thin cast iron and pitch fibre, for example, may be damaged by preparation that would be acceptable in a sound modern plastic pipe.
A second camera pass can reveal a hole, wider fracture or lost support that was covered during the first inspection. If that happens, the drainage company should explain the new finding before changing the length or method.
Branches, bore and time out of use
Incoming connections inside the liner length need to be identified before installation. Depending on the chosen system and access, they may need protection or reopening after curing. A connection outside the agreed start and finish remains outside the repair.
The liner also occupies part of the original bore. The company quoting for the work should consider the starting diameter and any existing deformation rather than relying on a general statement that a smoother surface will improve flow.
Drainage use normally has to stop during preparation, installation and curing. The actual period depends on the system and site. Ask the company carrying out the work to state the restriction it requires instead of relying on a generic time estimate.
What should be recorded afterwards
Completion CCTV can show the visible liner, both ends and the connections reached by the camera. Using the same chamber reference and direction as the first survey makes it possible to relate the finished work to the original defect.
Keep that footage with the quotation, any approved change and the installed system information supplied by the drainage company. The quotation checklist lists the points worth agreeing before attendance.
Can CIPP line a collapsed pipe?
No. A liner follows the host pipe and cannot rebuild a section that has lost its shape or support.
Can a branch remain open through a liner?
Connections within the chosen length have to be located and included in the installation plan. The drainage company should state how each live branch will be treated.
