Drain Relining and Insurance Claims

Drain relining and insurance claims involve separate technical and policy decisions. Keep the survey, proposed repair and insurer's requirements clearly recorded.

Drain relining and insurance claims should be kept as two linked but separate decisions. The drainage company describes the fault and repair; the insurer decides what evidence it needs and whether the policy responds.

For non-urgent work, ask the insurer what it wants before authorising the repair. It may request photographs, an inspection report, more than one estimate or prior consent. Keep the first report, correspondence and invoices together so the sequence is clear. Drain relining and insurance claims should therefore be handled as linked but distinct pieces of work.

Keep the insurer informed before the pipe is repaired

Notify the insurer. Ask the insurer what evidence and approval process apply to the reported event. Record the defect before repair. Locate the physical damage and identify the drain section involved.

Agree the repair. Confirm who authorises the work and which pipe section has been accepted for repair. Complete the work. Retain the post-work footage, repair details and related communication.

The contractor and insurer answer different questions

The claim file should connect the reported symptom to a located fault without making a coverage promise. Keep the first inspection, written observations, photographs of visible damage and the proposed pipe section together.

CCTV, quotations and records for the claim

Record the first symptom, the date it was reported and the fault located by the survey. Keep any request from the insurer for approval or further evidence with that file.

Messages or authority received from the insurer. Changes agreed after cleaning or further inspection. Final footage and identification of the installed repair.

Why the method still depends on the pipe

An insurer’s involvement does not change the condition of the pipe. Collapse or severe displacement can require excavation, while a stable crack may suit an internal patch. Our project evidence page explains what helps identify buried work later.

Put the insurer’s written evidence request beside the quotation checklist. It remains the insurer’s decision whether the policy covers the proposed repair.

Repair evidence and the insurer’s decision

The insurer decides whether the policy covers the repair. The contractor’s role is to document the drain condition, defect location and proposed work for that decision.

Approval before planned work. Ask the insurer what approval they need before planned work. Take reasonable steps to prevent immediate harm, while retaining records and receipts.

Completion footage. Final CCTV and identification of the repaired section show the visible result and can be kept with the quotation and pre-work survey.
