Corroded cast-iron drain repair starts with controlled cleaning. Once loose scale is removed, the remaining iron can be checked for holes, thinning and enough continuity to support the proposed work.
More aggressive cleaning is not automatically better. Thin or brittle iron can be damaged by the wrong tool. Preparation should expose the surface in controlled stages so the next decision follows the pipe that is actually left. Corroded cast-iron drain repair should follow the exposed wall, not the scale seen in the first recording.

The first camera pass should continue beyond the tightest restriction where possible. Connections, changes of material and areas passing through walls or floors can alter both access and the consequence of opening the pipe.
A shallow scale ridge and a deep local mound may need different preparation. The technician also needs to distinguish material that can be removed from a wall that has already perforated.
The cast-iron surface after cleaning
Careful cleaning may reveal a continuous but rough wall, a local hole or material loss through a longer section. The shape and remaining support then decide whether an internal repair is still realistic.
A hole surrounded by stable pipe is a different decision from widespread wall loss. A liner cannot replace missing external support or correct a section that has moved out of alignment.
Cleaning reveals the repair boundary
It should not be used to make weak metal look new. Any area that cannot be safely prepared remains a limit on the proposed internal repair.
Choose a repair from the exposed condition
Treat the cleaned condition on its own evidence. A local opening, longer supported corrosion and a section with lost support do not share one repair boundary; use the repair-method guide after the wall is visible.
The narrowest remaining bore also matters. Adding a liner to a badly restricted pipe preserves that restriction, even if the new internal surface is smoother.
Keep the before and after views comparable
Footage before preparation shows the original restriction. A second pass shows what cleaning exposed. If a repair is installed, completion CCTV can then locate the treated section, visible ends and relevant connections.
Those views should refer to the same chamber and direction so a future inspection does not confuse scale removal with the installed repair.
Can every corroded iron pipe be lined?
No. The pipe must retain enough shape, continuity and support for the proposed liner. Cleaning can reveal that direct replacement is more appropriate.
Does lining restore the original bore?
No. A liner sits inside the host pipe, so the remaining opening must be considered before installation.
