Deformed pitch-fibre pipes can narrow well beyond the chamber opening. The assessment therefore follows the complete run and records the tightest point before preparation or lining is proposed.
Moderate distortion may be prepared and reinforced, but a liner cannot create space that the old pipe no longer has. Severe flattening, folds or loss of support are marked for replacement. Mixed condition along one route can lead to a combined repair. Deformed pitch-fibre pipes need to be judged by that controlling restriction.
A clear chamber view can hide the real restriction
One pitch-fibre run may remain round near the access point but flatten below a later bend. The narrow section controls cleaning, camera and liner access.

What decides whether the pipe can be retained
Installation access is judged at the narrowest cleaned point, not at the open chamber beside it. If reshaping leaves a supported route through that point, lining remains possible; if not, the failed length needs direct replacement.
Where only one short section has lost too much shape, the practical answer can be direct replacement there and lining through the stable pipe on either side. The quotation needs to mark that boundary and name the connections included.
Reshape and line pitch-fibre where the pipe can be saved
Record the narrowest bore and how far the deformation continues. Those measurements show whether preparation and lining equipment can pass and whether the remaining opening would be serviceable afterwards.
What to tell the surveyor before the camera run
- Say how often flow slows or a blockage returns, and provide any earlier footage that shows a change in profile. Identify known pitch-fibre sections and the pipe materials connected to them.
- Chambers or rodding points before and after the restriction. Known ground movement or construction around the pipe route.
When retaining the pipe makes sense
Suitable pitch-fibre relining can preserve the route and reduce opening work above it. It does not restore a section that has already collapsed or shifted beyond recovery. A mixed job may combine internal treatment with replacement of the worst part.

What deformation means for the repair
Can a flattened pipe be reshaped? Some deformed pipe can be prepared for a liner when enough structure and route remain. Severe flattening requires direct replacement.
Does one narrow point mean the whole run is bad? Not necessarily. The contractor inspects the length around it to see whether damage is local or repeated and then defines repair limits accordingly.
Can I keep using a repeatedly blocked drain? Clearing can restore temporary flow, but repeat trouble deserves investigation. Check the pipe shape and underlying fault before relying on another unblock.
