Displaced Drain Joints

Displaced drain joints need the size of the step, pipe support and equipment route checked. Larger movement usually needs the joint exposed and rebuilt.

HomeDrain Problems and DefectsDisplaced Drain Joints

Displaced drain joints can catch waste and restrict the equipment used for an internal repair. The survey needs to show the size and direction of the step as well as the condition supporting the pipes on either side.

The size and direction of the step decide what is realistic. Lining can bridge some minor joint movement when the bore stays open and the pipe is stable. A joint that has separated or dropped out of line must usually be exposed so alignment and bedding can be restored. Displaced drain joints are therefore assessed against both pipe condition and the proposed equipment.

Camera access does not prove repair access

A small camera may cross an offset that stops a packer or folded liner. The step can also leave too little support for an internal repair to bridge. Equipment route and pipe stability both matter after the defect is located.

Measure joint movement and the remaining pipe route

  • Clear the view. The crew removes trapped material and inspects the joint profile without deposits in the way.
  • Check the route. The contractor confirms that repair equipment can reach and pass the movement without obstruction.
  • Match the method. A supportable joint may be sealed internally; a larger displacement needs direct access.
  • Check the full route. CCTV covers the completed area and checks that the working bore and connections are clear.

Repairing suitable joints without opening the surface

A liner follows the existing bore. It can bridge a modest joint fault where the route and surrounding pipe remain stable. It cannot straighten a severe offset or restore missing support; excavation and replacement may be needed for that. The CCTV report should show the limit before no-dig work is priced.

Show us the joint from a known chamber

  • The location of recurring snags or blockages. Footage that approaches the joint from an identifiable chamber.
  • Ground movement, building work or excavation near the pipe route. Signs of leakage, root entry or debris caught at the step.
  • Available access beyond the displaced connection.

What CCTV must show at a displaced joint

CCTV should show the exposed edge of the joint, the direction of the step and the remaining opening. A modest, stable gap may accept an internal seal; pipe ends that have changed level or lost support need to be opened and realigned.

An exposed edge at a displaced joint interrupts the bore and can catch solids. The CCTV should show the size and direction of that step so the restriction is not described only as another blockage.

Can you repair just one joint? Yes, where the fault is isolated and the surrounding drain is sound. The survey must still check nearby joints and the stability of the route.
