Drain cleaning before relining removes material that hides the pipe wall or would prevent an internal repair sitting correctly. Roots, grease, silt and hard scale behave differently, so the cleaning method has to be chosen for the actual deposit and host pipe.
Cleaning is preparation, not a promise that lining will follow. Once the surface is visible, a fresh inspection may confirm the planned repair or reveal collapse, deep corrosion or deformation that needs a different response. Our guide to lining suitability explains the main limits.
First identify what needs removing
Soft silt can often be moved by water, while woody roots or mineral scale may need cutting. Grease behaves differently again. The drainage company should identify the obstruction before selecting tools and should know which chamber or downstream point will be used to recover the loosened material.
The pipe material changes the approach
Thin cast iron can perforate when scale is attacked too aggressively. Softened pitch fibre can distort under unsuitable pressure. Preparation should expose the wall in controlled stages rather than pursue the fastest possible removal.
Cleaning and recovery belong in the same plan
Roots and solid fragments should be removed from the system instead of being pushed around the next bend. Fine deposits also need controlling so they do not settle in another section. On a longer run, noting where each type of material came from helps the second survey explain the condition beneath it.
Normal drainage use can refill the pipe while work is taking place. The site contact needs to know which sinks, toilets, process discharges or surface-water inlets must pause and for how long. The drainage company can then work and inspect under conditions that keep the wall visible.
Remove the obstruction safely
Use tools and pressure suited to both the deposit and the pipe. Stop and inspect if the exposed surface begins to break up or lose shape.
Recover loose material
Collect roots, scale and debris at an agreed point. Leaving it in the drainage system simply creates another possible blockage.
Inspect the clean wall
Run the camera again to record cracks, joints, corrosion and deformation that could not be seen before preparation.
When the repair plan has to change
A root mass may conceal an open joint. Scale can hide a hole in cast iron, and a blockage can cover a pipe that has already flattened. If the second survey shows a materially different fault, ask for the proposed response and any revised price before further work continues.

What to agree in the quotation
Check whether cleaning, material recovery and the second camera pass are included. The quotation should also say who approves a change if the clean wall is worse than expected. That separates the known preparation work from a repair that cannot yet be confirmed.
Does jetting always prepare a pipe for lining?
No. The suitable method depends on the deposit and pipe condition; roots or hard scale may need different equipment, and fragile material may limit what can safely be removed.
Why inspect again after cleaning?
Deposits can hide the true wall. Fresh CCTV shows whether the proposed repair still fits the exposed damage and records the surface used for that decision.
